Get ready to play! CHEST Games transition to online platform

CHEST 2020 will debut a new on-demand gaming platform so you can compete with peers and play with a purpose!

When you think CHEST Annual Meeting, there’s no doubt hands-on learning and games come to mind. CHEST has consistently pushed the envelope with its innovative games that deliver education about diseases of the chest in a fun, interactive way that tests competency.

This year’s virtual meeting will debut a new gaming experience—an on-demand platform where you can create profiles, play over 10 bite-sized games, compete with peers, and earn experience points to track progress and win prizes! The CHEST Player Hub powered by The Training Arcade® will be directly connected to the virtual meeting platform, available in the virtual lobby, Experience CHEST, and accessible on-the-go—making it easy for you to play and learn on your own time. Simply sign on with your CHEST ID and play on demand!

“We continue to push the definition of what CHEST Games means by offering them online,” said CHEST Game-Based Learning Manager Christina Lorenzo, MS. “We’re excited about the reveal of this new platform that’s personalized and sociable. The sticky and fun nature of gaming helps drive players to the platform and the competition encourages learners to replay games, thereby increasing knowledge retention without realizing it.”

Additionally, live game breaks will be sprinkled throughout the meeting between education sessions where you can compete in real time with other meeting attendees. Those games include CHEST Conquest, Nodal Nemesis, and SEEK SNEAK, and will all be hosted by CHEST faculty, Drs. Kelly, Machuzak, and Test, respectively.

“These fun games test your knowledge and help you stay engaged in the live events,” Lorenzo added. “They’re a great way to take a break, refresh, and recharge from the back-to-back education sessions.”

Two other types of live games will be showcased at the meeting: the popular CHEST Challenge, a Jeopardy!-style game, will be hosted virtually for the first time in 2 decades for fellows to complete against rival institutions by racing to hit the buzzer, answer questions, and phoning a friend all under the pressure of a live virtual audience, in addition to a Virtual Escape Room where clinicians will have to exercise their knowledge and problem-solving skills on medical knowledge-based puzzles as they race to space. Through the CHEST Player Hub and the live group games, CHEST will continue to embody its commitment to offer fun game-based learning to its learners even when in-person events are not possible!

Games now available on the CHEST Player Hub

Air Diver: Severe Asthma
In this CHEST Game, learners will be presented with six animated patient case vignettes surrounding the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of severe asthma. Learners will be asked to decide on the best next step for each case through multiple choice questions. Learners will earn points for each correct answer for the chance to top the leaderboard in this interactive game.

COPD Whack-a-Doc
Under time pressure, players are presented with three “facts” about COPD diagnosis and/or management. They must “whack” (select) the wrong one. If they do not, or if they do not do so within the time allotted, an alarm sounds and they must try again. After each question, there are explanatory slides to reinforce the critical teaching points.

Dr. Neb (Scenarios 1-4)
Play Dr. Neb and put your skills as a pulmonologist to the test by building relationships with patients with COPD and helping make difficult long-term care treatment choices. This game spans four scenarios in two patients. It is recommended that these scenarios are played in sequence.

Game of Nodules
Bring your sword of knowledge to the fight in the interactive Game of Nodules, where you will face multiple levels of challenging questions on the management of patients diagnosed with lung nodules. Topics range from recent guidelines and diagnoses to follow up and management of patients diagnosed with lung nodules. Be quick and accurate in your answer selections, as the player with the highest score attained in the least amount of time will claim the throne in Game of Nodules!

PAH Jeopardy
PAH Jeopardy is a computer game adoption of the popular game show, Jeopardy!, where you can test your knowledge of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Jumper
Test your knowledge of Pulmonary Fibrosis in this action-packed “jump” game. Compete for the highest score to be at the top of the leaderboard!

You Snooze, You Win!
In this Jump game, players navigate their avatar to jump from platform to platform answering sleep questions along the way. Players earn points and lives for each question they answer correctly and additional points for landing on a variety of platform types. The highest jumper has the chance to top the leaderboard and win prizes!

NEW! CHEST Games

NEW GAMES IN THE CHEST PLAYER HUB:

Airway Clearance Jeopardy!
Players immerse themselves into a timeless, mobile game of Jeopardy!, focused on airway clearance techniques. Through answering questions on the board, they must apply their knowledge of what airway clearance techniques are best for cystic fibrosis patients, based on their lung pathology. The player’s accuracy will drive up their score and ultimately their leaderboard placement amongst their peers.

COPDetective
COPDetective game is a fun interactive game that educates pulmonologists on The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) and treatable traits approach to COPD Management. The player becomes a pulmonologist detective, who will watch the video of physicians’ and patients’ dialogue, and evidence with mini-quizzes to identify the best disease management for the patients. While playing this game, the player learns about the underrecognized and underreported symptoms, understands the link between lung function and exacerbation to choose the suspect, the ideal pharmacological and nonpharmacological choices, and treatment for comorbidity conditions. This game allows the player to compete with other players for the best score on the leaderboard. Bring your detective instinct and the gamer inside you!

Flu Match
Flu Match is a fast-paced game in which players swap pieces on the gameboard to create identical combinations of three or more health icons. Once icons are matched, they are eliminated from the board and replaced with new icons, which can lead to the potential for more matches. Knowledge check flu questions are woven into the game to act as power-ups and to reinforce general knowledge on the flu, prevention, symptoms, and treatment.

ILD Diagnosis Detective
ILD Diagnosis Detective is single-player mobile mystery game of deduction and diagnosis in five elementary steps that mirror the clinical differential diagnosis process for Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). The player assumes the role of a detective who must review the patient case and match evidence with suspected diagnoses to uncover the final diagnosis. The wrap-up reinforces the correct diagnosis and highlights nuances in the disease presentation. This game spans 15 cases of varying complexity and players are scored based upon both matching accuracy and final suspect selection. Scores are displayed on a master leaderboard to encourage competition amongst peers and to drive players to replay cases to achieve higher accuracy scores and reinforce knowledge. The game is designed to be played in short bursts, where the pulmonologist can pick up their phone and play a case in under 10 minutes during their commute to clinic or on a lunch break.

Treasure CHEST
Ahoy there, landlubber! Treasure CHEST is a virtual scavenger hunt in which the player earns points by answering challenging medical-themed puzzles (use hints if you need, but they’ll cost you valuable points). Compete with your peers to collect the most points as you race to the top of the leaderboard to claim the Treasure Chest for your own (actually, we’ll have a winner each day)! All Hands Hoy!
