FISH Bowl competition makes its debut

This year, CHEST introduced a new competition that will take place Monday and Tuesday at the annual meeting. Inspired by Shark Tank™, CHEST’s “kinder, gentler, yet still competitive and cutting-edge” FISH Bowl (Furthering Innovation and Science for Health) will feature CHEST members disrupting beliefs about how clinical care and education are performed. Health-care providers will present innovative ideas pertaining to education and clinical disease for pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.

Contestants submitted their ideas in two categories: clinical disease and education.

→ Clinical Disease: What is the “next big thing” in the diagnosis and/or treatment of pulmonary, critical illness, or sleep disorders? This was judged on potential impact to improve quantity of quality of life, be of high value (benefit relative to cost), novelty, and delivery of presentation.

→ Education: The panel of judges was looking for an innovative and important educational initiative at the GME or CME level. This was judged on rationale, feasibility, appropriateness of the outcome measures, evaluation and assessment plan, proposed method of dissemination, and presenter delivery.

Submissions were accepted in the form of a 2-minute video pitch and the finalists were selected from there.

→ Clinical Disease Category Finalists:

Crouse Lung PaRTners, Russ Acevedo, MD

Standardizing and Automating Incentive Spirometry, Ernest Chan, MD

Improving Communication in Ventilated Patients, Catherine Gao, MD

→ Education Category Finalists:

Time to Vent: A Blended Learning Experience, Donna Cota, DO

Teaching Assessment Committee (TAC), Rachel Quaney, MD

Quizomics, Siva Bhavani, MD

Attendees will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award on their way out of the competition. All winners will be announced at CHEST Challenge on Tuesday evening. A total of $3,000 will be awarded to the winners: $1000/category $500/People’s Choice Award/Category.
