The Clinical Utility of the BioFire® FilmArray® Pneumonia Panel and Procalcitonin to Aid in Pneumonia Diagnosis
October 20, 2021 from 12:35 pm - 1:20 pm CDT
Join BioFire Diagnostics for a Learning Theater Event and Live Q&A presented by Tufik R. Assad, MD, MSCI.
Patients with pneumonia are frequently over-treated with antibiotics because sputum cultures are often delayed and unreliable, forcing providers to rely on empirical antimicrobial regimens. The BioFire Pneumonia Panel delivers fast and accurate pathogen identification in about an hour, which allows physicians to put patients on appropriate therapy faster. Dr. Assad will discuss current trends in pneumonia diagnostics and review cases to illustrate the use of the BioFire Pneumonia Panel and procalcitonin in the rapid and precise identification of the causative pathogen in several cases of pneumonia.
The BioFire Pneumonia Panel can detect 33 clinically relevant pathogenic targets, including 18 bacteria, 8 viruses and 7 antimicrobial resistance genes, from sputum (including endotracheal aspirate) and bronchoalveolar lavage (including mini-BAL) samples. The panel provides semi-quantitative results for 15 bacteria, which may help determine whether an organism is a colonizer or an infectious agent. The BioFire Pneumonia Panel has the potential to significantly improve time to result, which may empower physicians to optimize therapy faster.
BioFire Diagnostics offers syndromic infectious disease diagnostic solutions with several assay-specific reagent panels. Each panel provides the ability to detect and identify a broad grouping of probable pathogens, surrounding a specific syndrome, in a single, rapid PCR-based test. The syndromic testing approach provides fast and accurate diagnostic results, maximizing the probability of identifying the pathogen responsible for the clinical syndrome and helping physicians enhance patient management when time to diagnosis is critical. BioFire currently offers diagnostic panels that tackle five infectious disease syndromes: respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, blood stream infections, meningitis/encephalitis, and pneumonia. With comprehensive menus, the BioFire® FilmArray® Panels empower physicians to choose the right test, the first time. Don’t Guess. Know.
