Calling all CHEST 2019 trainees

Every year, CHEST finds different ways to engage trainees and make the most of their annual meeting experience through events and courses.

“CHEST is a great opportunity for trainees to learn, to have fun, and to establish professional connections with other physicians and trainees,” said Mauricio Danckers, MD, FCCP, Vice Chair of the Training and Transitions Committee. “They get to see what CHEST is about, what our educational style is like, a taste of our outstanding scientific program while sharing the passion we all attendees have for our field of expertise.”

A scientific meeting can be overwhelming—with hundreds of topics and sessions to choose from—and difficult-to-navigate if you’re a first-time attendee or a fellow, said Dr. Danckers, clinical faculty at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. CHEST offers the trainees great resources and a dedicated program to get most out of the meeting.

The Trainee Lounge acts as home base where trainees can relax with their peers while connecting with other faculty and young professionals.

“The curriculum within the lounge is developed by fellows for fellows,” Dr. Danckers said. “Speakers might address how to deal with fellowship challenges and common topics like contract negotiations, how to find your first job, and what’s different in a community-based setting vs academic setting. All of this is in a relaxing environment where an incredible amount of knowledge is shared with the audience.”

Another great activity for fellows is the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellows Courseon Saturday, October 19. Fellows are nominated by their program directors from all around the country to attend this 1-day review course led by remarkable faculty. The course format has been revamped over the past 2 years to nicely fit fellows’ needs and maximize their learning. The course shifted from a lecture-based course to a fully interactive immerse day through a variety of simulation modules that provide fellows, through a hands-on experience, with the education they need and they want. This allows trainees to learn by doing while taking advantage of CHEST’s simulation platforms. CHEST reach continues to expand every year and is welcoming 150 fellows to New Orleans this year.

“Trainees get to enjoy hands-on learning while having closer interactions with faculty and their peers,” Dr. Danckers said. “Even when standing in line for the next simulation module, organic professional networking is taking place with fellows exchanging names and numbers with their peers.”

TheCHEST Challenge is also a very unique CHEST trainee event, Dr. Danckers said. On the night of Tuesday, October 22, the top three scoring fellowship programs compete in a Jeopardy!-style game. The teams were selected over the course of the year through various competitions, including a Twitter challenge and an online quiz.

“Every year, we try to give it a little twist and add something different for the CHEST challenge. Come and see it yourself!” Dr. Danckers said. “People laugh and people learn.”
