In the rapidly changing world of chest medicine, the journal CHEST® advances patient care through publishing rigorous research. Each month, the journal features the best in peer-reviewed studies and houses CHEST’s multidisciplinary clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements. Last year, the journal CHEST expanded its publications portfolio by establishing CHEST® Critical Care and CHEST® Pulmonary to share even more relevant, peer-reviewed research with readers.
During CHEST 2024, several sessions led by editors and authors for the three journals will present a curated selection of articles that have appeared in these publications over the past year to provide attendees with a special inside look behind the practice-changing research featured in the journal CHEST, CHEST Critical Care, and CHEST Pulmonary.
“This is the first annual meeting where we’ve had all three journals in full operation, so we’re excited to host these sessions to highlight some of the impactful work across the entire CHEST portfolio,” said CHEST Pulmonary Editor in Chief, Matthew C. Miles, MD, MEd, FCCP, Associate Professor of Medicine in Pulmonary and Critical Care with Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and the Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Practice-Changing Research in Education and Clinical Practice, Presented by CHEST Journal, on Sunday, October 6, at 1:30 pm ET, in Room 210C of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, will include three presentations from original research papers recently published in the journal CHEST. Presenters will explore topics related to medical education, pulmonary exercise testing, and post-COVID follow-up.
Attendees will have a unique opportunity to learn about developing and validating a massive hemoptysis simulator for bronchoscopy training, gain insights into the mechanisms of dyspnea in patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction, and identify persistent diffusion abnormalities for patients without clear structural residua or ventilation abnormalities after COVID-19 infections.
“We’ve held the practice-changing research sessions for a couple of years at the CHEST Annual Meeting, and they are always well attended because they highlight several articles that significantly impact clinical practice,” Dr. Miles said.
During Best of CHEST Journals, Presented by CHEST, CHEST Critical Care, and CHEST Pulmonary, on Tuesday, October 8, at 4 pm, in Room 256 of the convention center, three authors will present key results and study designs from their selected articles, with journal editors to provide brief commentary and insights.
CHEST Critical Care will highlight “Ideal Postdischarge Follow-Up After Severe Pneumonia or Acute Respiratory Failure” from lead author Katrina E. Hauschildt, PhD, BCPA, to illustrate what primary care clinicians consider ideal follow-up for patients following these critical illnesses. Dr. Hauschildt is a sociologist whose interests extend into critical care.
“We are excited to highlight the fact that critical care is an interprofessional game, both in terms of how we deliver it and how we study it,” explained CHEST Critical Care Editor in Chief, Hayley B. Gershengorn, MD, Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Miles shared that CHEST Pulmonary will analyze “Invasive Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Identifies Distinct Physiologic Endotypes in Postacute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection” with lead author Michael G. Risbano, MD, MA, FCCP.
“There is not only one answer to the problem of shortness of breath and decreased exercise capacity for some patients in the year after contracting COVID,” Dr. Miles said. “The audience will leave the presentation with important insights into work that is being done to better understand these symptoms and eventually improve them.”
Daniel A. Culver, DO, and journal CHEST Editor in Chief, Peter J. Mazzone, MD, MPH, FCCP, will discuss “Efzofitimod for the Treatment of Pulmonary Sarcoidosis” and describe the tolerability, safety, and effects of efzofitimod on patient outcomes in pulmonary sarcoidosis.
Even more highlights will be featured during Practice-Changing Research in Pulmonary Vascular Disease, Presented by CHEST Journal, Tuesday at 8 am, and Practice-Changing Research in Critical Care, Presented by CHEST Journal, Wednesday, October 9, at 8 am, both in Room 206AB.
Drs. Gershengorn and Miles said they hope all the sessions will underscore the impressive and diverse research across the CHESTjournals portfolio for annual meeting attendees to utilize throughout the year.
“The work in all three CHEST journals is helping to move the field forward with serious research that is relevant and applicable to annual meeting attendees’ clinical practices at home,” Dr. Miles said.
